Tree pruning and tree removal in residential areas often present unexpected surprises in the form of wildlife. Most encounters end with both parties being surprised and frightened but with little else. Often a tree climber has a squirrel or bird chattering at them in annoyance trying to evict the unwanted visitor in their home.
Most of these encounters are little more than a conversation between man and animal. Both agree to an amicable truce and each proceed to their assigned tasks. Sometimes, however, the tree crew members encounter a severe impasse which requires a more comprehensive solution. Thus is the story with the raccoon.
Big O Tree Saves Family of Raccoons
In the fall of 2019 a large high risk tree required removal because it was at significant risk for failure and damage. As the arborist was proceeding through the process of removing the tree he discovered that a family of raccoons resided in the hollow trunk of the tree. The work to remove the tree was halted while the crew discussed the issue. They devised a plan to preserve the raccoon family while still removing the dangerous tree.
The plan was to use the crane they had to remove the tree and then to remove the entire section of the tree which contained the family. Following this the crew would carefully lower the trunk and its inhabitants to the ground. This was done successfully and the raccoon family was removed from the tree intact, with no injuries and a new home was found. The tree was safely removed and the raccoon family is happy and safe in their new location.
