Big O Tree’s turf treatment program has been carefully designed to promote healthy lawns in the mid-Atlantic turf transition zone, an especially difficult area for achieving premium turf. Below is a general year-round guide for keeping your mid-Atlantic lawn healthy. In addition, soil analysis by a certified lab every three years is suggested to keep pH and key nutrients balanced.

Spring

Pre-emergence control of crabgrass and other difficult to control annual grasses and broadleaf weeds.

Broadleaf weed control where necessary. Controlled release fertilizer where necessary. Aeration (upon request) relieves compact soil and encourages a more vigorous root system.

Summer

Postemergent weed control where necessary. Controlled release fertilizer where necessary.

Apply preventative or curative insecticide/grubicide applications, where necessary.

Mid August through early October is the prime time to plant grass when warranted (usually because of drought or disease damage or poor mowing habits).

Autumn

Autumn is the best time to fertilize cool season turf varieties, one or more times. Broadleaf weed control is also excellent in the fall of the year.

Autumn is when you are building the lawn for the next year, encouraging stolon, rhizome, and tiller activity which results from a well fed root system that stores energy it otherwise loses in the spring and summer.

Aeration (upon request) relieves compact soil, with or without overseeding.

Winter

Keep excess leaves that were not removed in the autumn off the lawn if possible.

Apply amendments such as lime per your soil analysis.

February (dormant seeding) is a good second choice to the Labor Day seeding option. You take what mother nature will give you with results, but this tends to be early enough to stay on schedule with spring treatments which would come in March or April.
